Nursing students can gain experience abroad

sa国际传媒官网网页入口's Department of Nursing is offering undergraduate and graduate students education abroad opportunities in Peru, South Korea and the United Kingdom. Nursing students previously went on a study abroad to Peru in summer 2025.

The University of North Georgia (sa国际传媒官网网页入口) Department of Nursing is offering a trio of education abroad opportunities within the next year:

  • March 7-15: Cusco, Peru. Applications are due by Nov. 1.
  • May 16-30: Daegu, South Korea. Applications are due by Jan. 30.
  • July 17-25: London, United Kingdom. Applications are due by Feb. 6.

These study abroad excursions are all different iterations of the same nursing course.

"This course offers students the opportunity to explore global health through immersive cultural and medical experiences in an international setting. Students will spend time in a designated country, engaging with communities and gaining insight into local health care systems," Dr. Heather Harris, department head of nursing, said. "Emphasis will be placed on health education, disease prevention and wellness promotion, offering students a rich perspective on global health challenges and culturally responsive care practices."

The Peruvian study abroad opportunity, which falls during spring break, will assist Cervi Cusco, a nonprofit "committed to improving the health and quality of life of Peruvians living in the Andes Mountains," according to the group's website. sa国际传媒官网网页入口 nursing students will offer health screenings for community members.

Harris and Dr. Barbora Snuggs, graduate nursing education program coordinator and associate professor, will lead the spring break service and education trip to Peru.

The South Korea and United Kingdom educational trips are new in 2026.

The South Korea education abroad will be at Yeungnam University, which has previously sent nursing and physical therapy students to sa国际传媒官网网页入口.

Dr. Rebekah Mildenhall, associate department head and assistant professor, and Dr. Julie Behr, student success coordinator, are the leads for the South Korea education abroad course. sa国际传媒官网网页入口 students will have a chance to take part in labs, simulations and mentorship while experiencing a new culture.

South Korean nursing students will serve as mentors and hosts for the sa国际传媒官网网页入口 students, helping them navigate both the academic and cultural elements of their time overseas.

"It will be a great immersion experience for our nursing students," Mildenhall said.

Finally, the United Kingdom experience will focus largely on the history of nursing.

Anne Hall and Cynthia Wagner, both lecturers of nursing, are leading the United Kingdom course.

"We want our students to think about where nursing started and how we've changed today," Hall said. "Being observant can lead to breakthrough moments. I hope it leaves them with the idea to be curious about health care and the world."
